DENTAL IMPLANTS
There have been many advancements in dentistry over the past decade, however, none has had the impact of dental implants. Although dental implants have been available for over thirty years, new and innovative technologies and treatment procedures means they are easier to place, more successful and are of much higher quality.
If you are missing a tooth , several teeth or all of your teeth, dental implants are a versatile, strong and natural looking replacement option. It is vitally important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible to prevent a range of dental health problems including the movement of surrounding and opposing teeth encroaching into the vacant space and a reduction in your jawbone density due to missing tooth root, making placement of an implant in the future a more difficult and lengthy procedure.
Receiving your implant requires preparation and clinical precision in order to achieve your desired result. The team at Align Dental will discuss with you in detail the process for receiving your implant, as every procedure will require a different approach dependant on your personal situation.A thorough clinical examination will be conducted which will include a detailed series of x-rays,CT scans and dental study casts.
Implants are made from medical grade titanium and resemble a screw with a slightly rough surface which ensures a strong bond with your jawbone is achieved. The implant becomes a solid foundation to support a crown for a single missing tooth or a bridge for more than one missing teeth.
Placed under local anaesthetic often with sedation, the procedure requires only a minor incision in your gum-line with the implant being gently guided into its pre-determined position and the incision sutured closed. Many patients report little to no discomfort and return to their normal daily routine or work the following day. If you experience any discomfort after the anaesthetic has worn off, an over the counter pain medication can generally alleviate any pain issue.Depending on your personal situation, a replacement crown or bridge may be placed at the time of receiving your implant, or temporary teeth may be placed while your implant integrates naturally with your jawbone; this may take between three to six months.
Once your implant has integrated with your jawbone,it is uncovered and an attachment called an abutment is secured. It is to this abutment that your permanent teeth are attached. Dental implants look, function and feel identical to your natural teeth. Single or multiple missing teeth can be replaced returning the dentition to a biologically healthy and aesthetically pleasing state.
A meticulous oral hygiene routine is just as important for your implant as it is for your natural teeth. Although your implant is titanium and your replacement teeth are fabricated from high-grade porcelain, your surrounding gum and bone tissue can still be affected by periodontal(gum) disease. It is recommended to schedule check-up appointments with Align Dental every six months to ensure your implant and natural teeth are in perfect health.
